The Rosetta Stone was important because it tells us most of the things about the ancient Egyptians and has the different writings. it also tells us about a ruler you barely hear about and his name is Ptolemy V. if they never found the stone they would have never found out about him or ancient Egypt.

By function I think you mean purpose, The Rosetta Stone is a ancient peice of stone with writings of a story on in. The unique thing about it is that it is written in three ancient languages. I believe ancient Greek, some form of Egyptian and a third language I do not know, The near dead Egyptian language was impossible to read and luckily the Greek was the perfect translation. The Rosseta Stone is now in a musuem because it played an important role in history.

The Rosetta stone had three written languages telling the same story. This allowed someone to compare one language (ancient Greek) with the hieroglyphics (ancient Egyptian), and thus decode the hieroglyphics. By being able to read their writing, we understand the history of the ancient Egyptians far better.
