∙ 11y agoTelevision was an invention pursued by many people. John Logie Baird was the first to produce a working system but it is likely that if asked, he would not be able to offer just a single purpose for television.
At the time, delivering pictures of current events was perhaps as far as people would go in their aims for the new service. After the public launch of television by the BBC in 1929, factual broadcasts are supplemented by drama and so began the mix of news reporting with entertainment. The first televised drama was broadcast in 1930 and began the tradition of television drama that has continued since.

It is a communication system for sending visual images by electromagnetic transmissions within the radio frequency range.
Tele means 'to or at a distance.' [Greek tele 'far off']
Vision means 'sight or the ability to see.' [Latin visio]
So the television was invented to be able to send pictures by invisible radio waves and to be able to receive and view those pictures even though the receiver is a long distance from the transmitter, and there are no wires in between.
The first television images were static pictures, and sent along wires, but then systems were developed to send images by radio waves and, in due course, to send moving pictures by the same method!
One of the most significant demonstrations of the wonder of television was in 1927, on April 9th, when the first long distance television broadcast was made between Washington DC and New York.
