Originally, they provided of short range rapid fire firepower as a compliment to the full caliber bolt action and semi automatic rifles of the time. They've been largely replaced in this role by modern assault rifles. They were also used by personnel who needed a weapon which could be accessible in tight spaces (e.g., vehicle crew members, special operations, etc.).
