Castles were built in lots of different countries. Initially they were built in England by the Normans.

Castles would usually be built on high ground as a vantage point, they were usually built near towns to protect them.

The first step in building a castle was to put up earthworks. Typically a moat was dug, and the material removed from the moat was piled up were the castle would be, creating a mound called a motte. If the castle was to be stone, a foundation would be built at the same time.

A wall would be built on top of the mound, which could be stone or wood. This wall surrounded an open area called a bailey.

The bailey could have a keep in or at the edge of it, and the keep was a large stone tower.

The castle might have alterations and additions put on from time to time.

All of this construction was done by hand.

They were built by the nobleman or the monarchy. If it was built by the noblemen, they would have to have a charter from the King in order to build it.

They started off as motte and bailey castles with wooden fences and keeps on top of man made hills 'the motte' there was a small village at the bottom of the motte called the bailey because it was made of wood and wood could easily be burnt down the keeps on the motte became stone but the stone was to heavy for the motte so the keep had to be hollow. The Normans then stopped making mottes and built great towers on normal ground the great towers were high and had thick walls the entrance was on the first floor so attackers could not get into the tower as easily or take battering rams to knock down the doors. The great tower's weakness was the corners if the corners got hit by missiles then the foundation would crumble and the castle would become week that is why castles started to be built with round castles making concentric castles . The End

Castles were built in two important types of places. One was locations where the castles could be used for defense of important towns or cities. The other was locations where castles could protect important routes of transportation.

Sometimes castles were built in neither of these, just to provide defense of a group of people or family. Loch Leven Castle, for example, was built in the middle of a lake, which made it nearly impregnable, but where it did not protect anything or anyone except those in it.

The period in which castles were built started around 900 AD, and lasted into the 16th century, when people like Henry VIII of England were still building some.
