The bolts of the ballista were larger than an arrow, but lighter than a javelin. They had a weighted head made of lead placed on a removable foreshaft. The main shaft was made with flexible wood. In the 4th century BC the Romans developed a larger type of ballista (the ballista fulminalis) which could throw darts to a range which must be superior to 1,200 yards because it was said that it could project the darts over the river Danube.
