A:

It is part of Christian lore that Christians are persecuted and always have been, with numerous martyrs put to death during early Roman times, but this is far from the truth.

There was occasional and local, unofficial persecution of the early Christians of the Roman Empire, but it is estimated that widespread official persecution of Christian totalled no more than about twelve years, chiefly around 250 CE and at the end of that century. Origen, who, from his experience as well as reading, was intimately acquainted with the history of the Christians, declared that the number of martyrs was not great. Edward Gibbon (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), in explaining the tradition of early Roman persecution, says the ecclesiastical writers of the fourth or fifth centuries ascribed to the magistrates of Rome the same degree of implacable and unrelenting zeal which filled their own breasts against the heretics or the idolaters of their own times. Christians of this period needed to justify their own actions in persecuting others, by claiming that persecution of Christians had been far more common in the past.

Today, any Christians in North Korea could expect to be persecuted by this oppressive Communist regime, but the risks for Buddhists would be far greater. Some persecution of Christians occurs occasionally in Muslim-majority countries of the Middle East, but the official position of Islam is that Christians, as people of the Book, should be free to worship as they please.

Christians were - and, in some places, still are - persecuted in many ways. In the extreme way, this way usually in the past, some Christians were murdered for their faith - for example in Roman times, where Christians were fed to the lions. They were also thrown in jail, beaten, and thrown out of countries.

They were persecuted by a small amount of Jewish people at the start. Jewish people are not like that anymore, and even back then it was only some Jews, not all. The country of England started the church of England when Henry the 8th wanted a divorce and couldn't get one through the catholic church. England has never run all of Protentantism. They are only the head of the church of England (that is called Anglican). England and Germany persecuted fundamental Christians in the past. Some came to America on ships. The ones from Germany went to South Africa. Muslims have persecuted both Jews and Christians, and Muslims still persecute both. There has been some persecution of Christians in India and Nepal as well. Although Hitler's main target was Jews; he also killed Christians, journalists, handicapped people, and gay people. So the nazis persecuted some Christians. China persecuted Christians a lot when it was a communist country. Some have been killed in Vietnam as well.
