The British won the battle of Bunker Hill, because the Americans ran out of ammunition. The British attacked the Americans twice, and were beat back twice, but the third time, they caused the Americans to retreat. While the British won, they lost close to 50% of their men.
The British used a simple frontal assault sending its army straight up Breed's Hill where the colonists were dug in. They were not on Bunker Hill, because the colonists occcupied the hill in the night and in the darkness they missed Bunker Hill and wound up on Breeds Hill. The British charged up the hill, were beaten back, re-formed, charged again, were beaten back again, re-formed, charged a third time. This time the colonists were out of ammunition and had to retreat. General Gage could have landed a force by boat in the rear of the dug-in colonists which would have forced some or all of the militia to leave the forifications to defend against that threat. Instead, Gage chose the straight assault probably figuring he would break the colonists resolve and make them flee. It did not work.

If this had not happened, though, the Americans would most likely have won, considering that they killed more British than British who killed them. Most of the Colonist's deaths came from the retreat, and then the British conquered the hill.
