Florescent light bulbs produce a similar amount of light with much less power than incandescent light bulbs. Their initial cost is paid back in energy savings. They also last a lot longer. I exchanged every light in my house for florescent bulbs years ago and I haven't changed more than 4 or 5 in all that time.

LED bulbs are now on the market and are very expensive. But they use even less power to produce similar light and last many times longer than florescent bulbs. They are quite expensive, but what you get is an almost permanent bulb. In the future we will tell our grandchildren how we used to change light bulbs and they won't understand. I see a day when the bulbs become permanent parts of light fixtures and will not be replaceable in any typical sense.

The lightbulb that is best for cost saving is an LED bulb. These bulbs often cost in upwards of $20 or more, but they will consume much less energy than CFL bulbs and will create much less heat. They will also last much longer than regular bulbs.

You can reduce your home's energy bill by as much as 10% by using energy saving light bulbs. About 15% of your homes energy comes from the use of light bulbs. Using an energy saving bulb that uses 1/3 less wattage than a traditional light bulb can add up to some real energy savings over the life of the bulb. Although they are more expensive, they will pay for themselves in two ways. First, your home's lower energy bill will help offset the costs. Second, normal light bulbs will burn out or break three times faster than these energy saving bulbs.

What are the differences between a energy efficient light bulb and a regular light bulb?

How much difference does replacing a regular light bulb with energy saving bulb really make?

Suppose you a regular 100 W bulb that is replaced by a 20 W energy saving one, that saves 80 W. If it's a bulb that is on 6 hours a day it would use 876 units per year, while the energy saving bulb would use one fifth of that, 175 units. The saving is 701 units that would cost about £100. The energy saving bulb also lasts longer, 8000 hours instead of 1000 hours. In the above example the 100 W bulb would need to be replaced twice, while the energy saving bulb lasts 8000 hours, that would be nearly four years (on average).

How much did edison's light bulb cost?

The first commercially available light bulb cost $1 in 1881, which was three years after Thomas Edison developed the first practical incandescent light bulb. The Seattle Times reveals the $1 price in 1881 translates to $23 in 2013. By 1910, the cost of a light bulb dropped to 17 cents.

How much money can you save using energy efficient light bulbs?

That depends on the type of bulbs you replace, the type of replacement light bulb, how long you typically use a light bulb, and what the cost of electricity is in your country. Here is a sample calculation: Previously we normally used 100 Watt incandescent light bulbs. A 40 Watt fluorescent light bulb shines about as bright. That's a saving of 60 Watts or 0.06 kilowatts, equivalent to 0.06 kWh/hour. If we use the light bulb 6 hours a day, 30 days a month, that's 180 hours a month. Multiply that by the savings rate, and you get an energy saving of 10.8 kWh per month. At the costs of the light bulbs we use, and of electricity, we recover the cost of the light bulb in 1-2 months - and the light bulb typically lasts much longer than that. However, you should look how much YOU pay for electricity - just look at the bill from your power company. You should also check for how much you can get a light bulb in your country - and adjust the estimate according to how much artificial light you use per day.

What are the benefits of using an energy saving light bulb?

Save energy! This means lower electrical costs. Typically "energy saving" cost more in initial costs and depending on the frequency of use may or may not pay for themselves over the life of the device. However, items like energy saving florescent light bulbs have become much smaller in physical size, quite inexpensive AND now deliver more light, making them a very attractive item.
