On August 15, 1935, Wiley Post and American humorist Will Rogers were killed when Post's plane crashed on takeoff near Point Barrow, in Alaska. Wiley Post was born in Van Zandt County, Texas, but his family moved to Oklahoma when he was five. He gained national prominence by winning the National Air Race Derby, from Los Angeles to Chicago, in his aircraft named "Winnie Mae" Both victims of the crash are honored by airports in Oklahoma City. The major commercial airport is named after Will Rogers. A large FAA designated reliever airport in Oklahoma City is named after Post.
