I need to replace the driver side mirror for my 2005 altima. is it ok to get 2nd hand can i do it myself?

It's ok to replace the mirror with a second-hand one. The only difficulty will be to find one that will match the color of your vehicle. You can replace it yourself, and it's much easier if you have a repair manual to guide you for best results.

It is easy, as long as the door frame has no damage. Remove the black plastic trim piece from inside on the door panel directly opposite the door mirror. It snaps free and with some wiggling you can remove it to reveal the 3 nuts and bolts holding the mirror assembly in place on the door. You will also see the electronic connector(for the mirror) that unsnaps easily. There are two types of connector depending on the wiring of your car. One accepts the folding heating mirror(seven wires) and the other is for the fixed mirror (four wires). If you have the seven wire connector you can replace the mirror on your 07 Altima with a folding Heating mirror Even if your car did not come with it in the first place. It is a direct plug and play replacement. I got mine from Ebay and did it myself - I did not color match the exterior and just left it black.

I just did this myself and it was easy, didn't even have to remove the door panel. I am not a mechanic and I did it in 15 minutes. This procedure also works with passenger side mirror. 1. Remove triangle shape cover inside the door by the mirror. I did it by hand. 2. Remove any foam to expose 3 bolts. You will need a hex tool to remove bolts 3. Disconnect electrical connector prior to removal 4. Installation of mirror is just the reverse. I think you need to remove the body panel on the driver's side door to do this.. I will let you know later this week when my new one comes in and i have to do it myself.

you must first remove the door panel. this is a little tricky if you have not done this before. I suggest getting instructions for this too before you start. Once you get the door panel off, the mirror is a snap. 1. Remove the foam insulation 2. Disconnect the electrical connections for the mirror controls 3. Remove the three nuts securing the mirror to the vehicle 4. Replace the mirror and do above in reverse order. It is really easy. Be gentle with the door panel. There are plastic parts that are fragile. I got an estimate with parts and labor for one mirror for $450. I bought the mirror myself for $210 and put it on in about an hour and a half total so I save over $200. Good luck.
