The father can help care for them, as it relieves a lot of stress from the mom. However, if you only want one litter, you will need to separate them before the birth. Gerbils mate right after birth, and this is the female's most fertile time. The best way to have minimal litters is to have one litter that mom can raise, and then before the next litter comes, remove father and leave on of the older daughters in the tank with her. The daughter will help mom raise the litter. Place a son in dad's tank so that he does not get lonely.

Can you put to female gerbils in with new pups?

Gerbil mothers should be kept either alone with their pups or with the father and the pups. NEVER put two females together if one is pregnant or nursing, as the other female will most likely get defensive and kill the litter. This goes even for gerbils who get along really well. The only instance you can keep two females in with a litter is if the other pup is a female from the previous litter.

How do gerbils mate?

It's really quite self explainatory. Get younger gerbils, a male and a female. Make sure they aren't from the same litter, if they are the babies could have health problems. If they are younger, introducing them to one another should be a peice of cake, if not use the slipt-cage method. They should mate, and about 21 days later, you will have a litter of gerbils. =)

Can gerbils get fixed?

Male gerbils can be neutered, but it is not recomended. Female gerbils should not be spayed. In general male gerbils should not be neutered unless there is a good reason for it.

If your hamster is pregnant should you keep the father with them?

No. The father will eat the babies and could impregnate her again once she has her litter. Back-to-back pregnancies cause stress and can kill a mother and her unborn litter or she may eat her current litter due to stress.

Do you have to separate the baby gerbils from there parents?

No. You should leave the new gerbils, mother and father together. If the parents seem to be harming their children you can take the one harming and separate it using the split cage method.

How long do gerbils care for their young?

Gerbil parents will care for their young for as long as they are there with them or until another litter arrives. A gerbil pup should wean at four weeks, but it is recommended to keep it with its mother until at least six weeks, if not up to eight. At this point, it is best to separate them into male and female tanks and away from mom and pop, since mom will probably have another litter well on the way and gerbils are sexually mature around 10 weeks of age. If the mother has another litter, which shouldn't be until around 5 weeks of the older litter's lives, see how the mother reacts with them still in the tank, but it most likely will be time to separate them.

How should a mother gerbil care for her baby gerbils?

Mother gerbils should stay with there babies until atleast 4 weeks of age. If they eat there babies then something is wrong either they are dehydrated, the pup is sick, ect. If the father is with them it is fine. Gerbil's make great dads. To learn more go to: www.agsgerbils.org
