I only wanted to have one litter of gerbils but ive been reading that the father needs to help care for them when should you take the father out of the cage?

The father can help care for them, as it relieves a lot of stress from the mom. However, if you only want one litter, you will need to separate them before the birth. Gerbils mate right after birth, and this is the female's most fertile time. The best way to have minimal litters is to have one litter that mom can raise, and then before the next litter comes, remove father and leave on of the older daughters in the tank with her. The daughter will help mom raise the litter. Place a son in dad's tank so that he does not get lonely.

Can you put to female gerbils in with new pups?
Gerbil mothers should be kept either alone with their pups or with the father and the pups. NEVER put two females together if one is pregnant or nursing, as the other female will most likely get defensive and kill the litter. This goes even for gerbils who get along really well. The only instance you can keep two females in with a litter is if the other pup is a female from the previous litter.

It's really quite self explainatory. Get younger gerbils, a male and a female. Make sure they aren't from the same litter, if they are the babies could have health problems. If they are younger, introducing them to one another should be a peice of cake, if not use the slipt-cage method. They should mate, and about 21 days later, you will have a litter of gerbils. =)
