While you can hook up an external monitor to your computer if your video card is not working, it will not display anything.
An external monitor - will prove that the device is actually working (and it's just the display that's at fault).
The clickpad on an ASUS notebook will typically stop working if it has accidentally been disabled. The F8 function key at the top of the keyboard is deigned to turn the pad off and on.
Because the configuration on the first monitor has to be working correctly in order for the second monitor to work correctly. Also, so you can see what you are configuring on the first monitor.

A CRT monitor is much heavier and is a lot bigger front to back. It connects directly to a mains electricity supply and is power hungry. When it it working, getting close to screen will make the hairs on the back of your hand stand up. A LCD monitor of the same viewing size is lighter and physically flatter front to back. It often has an external power supply and uses much less power.
