Try getting a new Starter, however, since KIAs are a piece od S*** (I have one with the same problem, that nobody seems to know how to fix) Try getting in touch with a Kia dealer, even though it is going to be very expensive (~$500) as compared to a regular mechanic. Good luck, as I will need it too.

i would try the crankshaft position sensor. it is a frequent problem on Kia and would cause your symptoms. part cost is around $50 not including labor.

I had the same problem with my 2001 Sportage. I even replaced the crankshaft position Sensor ($72) which was a pain to get to. I finally took it to a shop and paid $85 for them to put on a computer. They told me the ECU was bad. The Electronic Control Unit... the brain box. Also the shop told me it was covered under warranty (under some federal recall thing). I called my local Kia dealer and they confirmed. The Kia dealer covered the ECU and towing! Now it runs perfect! Pay a few bucks to get it on a computer... and don't spend all your money replacing this & that.

Have u tryed puting in new spark plugs in that's what was wrong with my girlfriends car.

Possible

Dont' forget to check the simple things first. As with any other car, your starter can turn over the engine but if you don't have air, gas and spark your car will not work.

Before anything else, you need to rule out the basics.

My answer after a month of not starting: The Timing Key. Then it fired right up!

starter relay check that...

If you can jump the starter motor directly and get the engine to fire up this tells us the starter and battery and engine management systems are intact. This leaves us with a possible bad ignition switch, or the mechanical key tumbler is NOT allowing ignition switch to reach full travel - OR - you can have faulty/loose/corroded wiring between ignition switch, to starter relay, the relay may be bad, or wiring from relay to starter solenoid and so on. Easiest test would be testing, while cranking, using a DMM (digital multimeter) set to D/C volts scale - the voltage at starter solenoid. You hear a click in dash so likely the relay is accepting signal from Ig Switch. So how many volts get to starter solenoid? If you get about battery voltage when cranking, you have a faulty starter solenoid. So then you'd replace the starter/solenoid assembly. If you get low voltage, say battery is at about 12.4V at rest and solenoid sees only 8.6V "without" engine cranking, you've got a bad relay or wiring. Let me know if you need more? :)Answerbefore you call a mechanic check all fuses my Kia did the same to me and the fuse looked ok if your not sure about a fuse change it it would be alot cheaper than calling one of them in AnswerThe information that you've given is inadequate to diagnose the problem.

You don't say if the starter actually turns, turns slowly, just clicks once, clicks a few times or does nothing. There are an awful lot of possibilities. Lights and rasio don't prove alot other than there's minimal juice in the battery.

Posiibilities? Basically everything!

If its still not going try and get some more info together, however - recommend taking it to a mechanic.

Had this problem myself... the fuel pump fuse was blown.

check for fuel and spark. I would first start by wiggling the cam position sensor wires.

Check your battery. If your battery is very old one, it can't hold the charge... You need to buy new battery.

If it does it when you turn the key and the engine does not turn over, it is a weak battery or possibly a loose connection on the cables.

Why does 2001 Saturn SL need gas to turn over?

The Engine can turn over with out gas. The started is engaged and turn the crankshaft, just as one would turn the engine over by hand. For sustained revolutions however, gas is needed to react in the engine chambers

How does electricity turn on a car?

For a conventional vehicle direct current (DC) electricity from the battery causes a motor to turn which engages a gear that in turn causes the engine crankshaft to "turn over" or spin. This action makes the pistons move, drawing in a combustible fuel/air mixture. At the same time a spark is sent to each cylinder in turn. When fuel and spark combine it ignites causing the engine to start and run on the main fuel. The starter gear disengages and the starter motor stops. Without enough energy in the battery the crankshaft cannot turn over and the engine will not start.
