The first thing to check would be the battery connections. then the battery itself by testing at say auto zone. If those are ok I would move to the starter and reove and test it at the same type store.

Not an answer, but got the same problem. Car cranks, gets started then shuts right down.

Happened once before and was told the computer was bad. $800+

Need a less expensive answer. Thanks for anything.

How can you tell the difference between relay solenoid or starter going bad in a Ford Windstar?

A starter will seldom "go bad", but when it does, you will definitely hear a "grinding" or "dragging" noise as it rotates (usually is slow to rotate). That condition is called "starter dragging", caused by worn bushings. When the bushings wear, the starter will drag against the armature inside the starter hull, causing the slow rotation and "dragging" or "grinding" sound. A single click when you try to start the vehicle is usually indicative of a faulty starter relay/solenoid. Or possibly just a loose cable. A rapid clicking sound is usually caused by a low battery. Could also be caused by a loose cale.

1995 nissan240sx wont start I replaced the starter it still wont start unless I push it what could be the cause?

A no start condition can be caused by a bad battery, bad connections on the battery, bad connections on the starter or ground and possibly by a bad neutral safety switch or ignition switch. Use a test light and see if your getting fire to the small wire on the starter when someone trys to start it. If you are, the starter is not working. If you aren't, check the ignition switch and the safety switch.

Could a faulty ignition coil lead to increased emissions?

If it's weak you might have incomplete combustion or possibly an irratic misfire, but most likely the problem that causes increased emissions is elsewhere. An increase in hydrocarbons is often caused by the O2 sensor or possibly the EGR valve. You could also have a problem with plugs, distributor, rotor or plug wires.
