Roughly saying, it is less than a mile.

For instance, think of a gold atom. Nucleus is as big as 3 baseballs. The neaserst electron will be about 30.000 time a Baseball, which makes about 1.500 meters (~0.91 mile)

I am not sure how to do the proton the size of a baseball analogy, but if you make the whole atomic nucleus to be the size of a kid's marble, the first electron shell would be positioned slightly more than two miles away.

If the diameter of a marble is about half an inch, and the diameter of a baseball is about 2.9 inches (let's just say it's 3 in. since we're kind of using general estimates anyway), then the baseball sized proton have an electron cloud with a radius of about 12 miles.

If the nucleus of an atom was the size of a tennis ball, an electrons distance would depend on the identity of the atom. The atomic radius of an Iron atom is about 30,000 times the size of the nucleus. A tennis ball has a radius of about 1.25", so it would sit around 1.2 miles away.

Let's see: protons are on the femtometer scale and baseballs on the centimeter scale, so there's about a ratio of 10E-15 : 10E-2, or a baseball is around 10E13 or 10,000,000,000,000 times as big as a proton. The distance from Earth to Sun is 150,000,000,000 meters, so the answer is in the neighborhood of 1,500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 meters. That would be one-and-a-half yottameters.

according to the book "the dancing woo li masters" if a baseball was the size of the earth, the atoms would be the size of grapes.

Why isn't a galaxys size alone useful in determining its distance from Earth?

The only thing that can be directly observed is a galaxy's apparent size (angular size). Since galaxies come in different sizes, this can only give a rough idea of the galaxy's distance from Earth.
