If he gave you gifts, they are yours, but if he gave you an engagement ring, and YOU break off the engagement, the ring goes back to him, as it is a token of a future contract.

Almost certainly yes. Legally speaking, a gift is a gift. It doesn't really matter why he gave you the gifts; the fact is that he did, and thereafter they belong to you, not him. The one (possible) exception would be something like an engagement ring. Courts have generally ruled that an engagement ring is a conditional gift, and doesn't legally become the bride's property until the marriage (and therefore she has to give it back if the marriage is cancelled). This isn't ALWAYS the case, though, so you may have a shot even there.
