If air is heated by the earth's surface and that air then rises you would call this process what?

The process is called convection. The Earth's surface gets heated by the sun through a process called radiation.

O.K. differences in air pressure are generally caused by the unequal heating of the earth. The equator recieves more direct solar energy than other latitudes, so air at the equator is warmer and less dense that the surrounding air. Warm , less dense air rises and creates an area of low pressure.
