You have to wait until either your body kicks into labor on tis own, or your labor is induced artificially. There are three stages of labor (dilation of the cervix, pushing, delivery of the placenta). The first stage has two phases--latent phase and active phase. The active phase is what most people refer to as "hard labor," when contractions are strong and regular. The latent phase is "early labor," which can be mild, intermittent (stops and starts) or even largely passive. Multips (women who have had a baby before) may dilate passively (with minimal contractions) to about five centimeters. To get past 5, though, you need good, strong contractions. And these could come any time--an hour from now, or you could be walking around dilated to five for days.
I stayed 1 cm for almost 4 weeks. I didn't deliver until I was 40 weeks and 4 days. I'm sorry, I know you don't want to hear this. This was my 3rd child too. 10 lbs and 4 oz. Good Luck to ya.
