Nobody could answer that question without looking at your car. One of the possibilities is that your car is overheating. Check the coolant. By the way, if this is the case, and you are driving your car without coolant, stop driving right now because your car is in danger of being irreversabely ruined forever.

If you give the car gas and it immediately dies but idles without giving the car gas, the VAF could be unplugged. If the car immediately dies without giving the car gas, it could have low fuel pressure, vaccum leaks, compression issues.
If you drive your car without oil and it dies, your engine has seized. Time to replace the engine or the vehicle.

check your idle controle moter. it is probably crudded up or not wotking.
The trans won't cause it to die. Try changing the fuel filter.
Just turn on your car and wait a minute before driving. If it's exceptionally cold weather, wait till either the temperature gauge is at it's normal position or after a minute tap the gas a couple times till it idles down.
