Probably- it would be best to approach the appropriate people in your company and notify them of this error. Even if you are not liable for overpayment, honesty dictates that you would be paid the wages of your current position. If you got a promotion and continued to be paid the wages of your former position, you would speak up. So do the same even though the error is in your favor- you may be rewarded some other way for your integrity.

I worked in payroll services at my last job and want further training for a better position. What is the best program or degree to work toward?

The best degree to touch up on your payroll services is an HR (Human Resources) degree. This degree will train you to not only do the payroll for your company, but it will also give you a good insight on the hiring and firing process. Since you have previous experience in payroll and wish to attain a better job in that industry, an accounting degree would help you achieve that goal. Accounting degrees from 4-year colleges and universities allow people to get higher paying jobs in your industry.

Is it common to need a degree to work in payroll services or is it mainly on-the-job training?

It depends on the position within the payroll service. The company will post a variety of jobs, from data entry to management and supervision. The posting will detail the requirements of the position. If details are not given about additional training, that topic will be discussed in the interview.
