the check engine light comes on for many reasons here are a few egr valve, co2 sensor,engine temperature sending unit,running lean running rich gas cap is defective, timing and the list goes on and on if you are handy all these items are explained in the haynes auto books very well and it also tells you how to test and repair the problem and yes usually everytime the light comes on you will loose gas mileage give it a try
