Little is known about the wise men apart from the scriptural record. The precise number is not known; it could have been two or many. Tradition ascribes the number three based on the gifts mentioned in Matthew of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Tradition also incorrectly places the wise men in Bethlehem at the birth of the Savior. In fact, events subsequent to their visit indicate that the child had already reached the age of approximately two years by the time the wise men appeared (Matt. 2: 16).

Wise as they were, they were also strangers in Palestine during the reign of Herod, who was himself a "king" only at the pleasure of Rome. It seems that these learned men paid a visit to Herod to acknowledge his station as a local ruler. It would have been customary even to pay some form of tribute as a means of securing "permission" to visit the area.

Certainly they seemed to know more about the prophecies surrounding the birth of the Messiah than Herod himself did. While their inquiry appears to have assumed that Herod also knew of these prophecies, Herod's private reaction indicates that he found this inquiry to be deeply disturbing (Matt. 2: 3).

It is possible and probable that they could have arrived at Bethlehem even without Herod's response to their question. They appear to have been spiritual enough to receive a revelation in a dream that they should avoid returning to Herod, which they did (Matt. 2: 12).

Even when god gave the wisemen the star as a guide , to lead them. They used their wisdom and thinking that the king of the Jews must surely be born in a palace . They went to the palace of king Herod, And it was this silly act that cost thousandsof babies their lives.

According to Matthew's Gospel, the star they followed took them direct to King Herod's palace in Jerusalem. It was only after they had forewarned Herod and the kings priests and scribes had said that the baby must be in Bethlehem, that the star turned back on itself and directed them to Bethlehem and stood exactly over the house in where Jesus lay.

A:In Matthew's nativity story, the wise men travelled to Bethlehem to worship Jesus and to bring him gifts. In the narrative, a further, underlying reason for their journey is to alert Herod to the birth of the new 'king of the Jews', thus initiating the flight to Egypt and the parallels to Moses of the Old Testament.

When the wise men came to King Herod asking where the King of the Jews was to be born the scribe told Herod the city from sec 15?

This question has its timeline mixed. The account in Matthew 2 has Wise Men following the star from the East and asking for the King of the Jews to soon be born. This occurred during the reign of King Herod. When the King heard of this, he summoned his scribes to inquire about the place this birth event was to happen. They told him in Bethlehem per the prophecy in Micah 5:2. Herod then secretly summoned these Wise Men sending them to Bethlehem asking that they tell him where/when they find this new King.
