If the brain is starved of oxygen how long is it before the cells start to die and brain damage occurs?
if your brain has been starved of oxegen for 12 minutes due to a heart attack what can happen
Six to nine minutes seem to be the time frame a brain can tolerate being without oxygen before serious irreparable damage occurs. This can vary in newborns and young children who seem to be more resilient than adults. Also, temperature of the individual will also impact neurologic outcome. Colder temperatures decrease the body's oxygen demand so hypothermic states will lengthen the time tolerated without oxygen.
Is a congenital condition that occurs before, during or after birth and it is caused by alack of oxygen to the child's brain which can damage the brain. That damage affects the child's motor skills. With variable degrees of severity can vary from very little noticeable physical limitations to the extent that the child can't move, walk or feed himself.
A heart attack is known medically as a myocardial infarct. In this situation, blood flow to the heart muscle itself is blocked and the heart muscle affected becomes starved for oxygen. In general, some damage is permanent, but the degree of damage is based upon what vessel was blocked, the percentage that was blocked and how long the blockage was in place. In this context, "damage" means "death of heart muscle cells".
Creatine levels increase in the blood,(I may have misspelled that).. It is a protein byproduct of oxygen starved damaged muscle tissue. If it is very elevated it can damage the kidneys. You will feel very thirsty, this is the body wanting to flush the kidneys. Check for blood in the urine. Doctor will administer saline IV's to flush the system.
in basic life support you have what you call the ABCDE assessment airway breathing circulation disability exposure the first 3 are your priority as you need a patient airway , breathing , circulation to sustain life. if you are not breathing the bodys cells/tissues are starved of oxygen and start to die.this is called hypoxia of tissues the longer they are starved the more damage /death to cells
