Turn the ignition key to battery on/off three times. The third time you leave the battery power on and read the check engine light. It will blink the first number of the code, pause, then blink the second number of the code. I.E. a code 35 will blink the engine check light three times then pause then another five times. It will pause again and blink another code if such. At the end, it will code a 55 or end of test code. This will let you know that all the fault codes have been displayed and the test is over. Haynes manuals have the codes in them for reference. I used to get EVAP and O2 sensor codes on my '97 Stratus. I just ignored them even tho the check engine light was on for some time then would go out. Periodically they'd come back on for a while and then go out, recording the fault code into the computer. Good Luck. Rod. On a 1997 you will probably need a scan tool.

Get your vehicle checked ASAP:An illuminated check engine light means that the computer has found an emissions or Engine related fault.A "flashing" check engine light tells you that the fault that has been detected needs to be repaired IMMEDIATELY, and that the fault can and will damage the catalyst..... Do not hesitate.Have your engine codes read and get this checked NOW.See "Related Questions" below for more

The check engine light does not come on when an oil change is due. The check engine light is for an emissions related failure. It is reset with a scan tool after the fault is repaired.

If your check engine light is on - get the engine checked by a qualified mechanic - don't try turning the light off - it is telling you there is a fault in your engine.

When the check engine light is on, the computer sets a fault code. Most auto parts stores will check this code for free and tell you how to fix it.

The light, being illuminated, indicates a fault in the system. Until that fault is remedied, the lamp will not reset itself. Faults could be: * low engine oil level * engine oil level too high (yes, damage can occur from too much oil) * oil pressure is too low
