NEVER stop payment on a check that has been rendered for services or goods. Stopping payment on a valid business transaction (especially one where a contract has been signed), is illegal and can cause serious legal problems for the individual who wrote the check. Contact the attorney and inform he or she that you do not wish to have them represent you in the matter. The terms of the agreement you entered into will determine whether or not the retainer or any portion will be refunded to you.
