You may be able to have a good guess by looking at the words around it. For example:
She walked up the small rounded grassy knoll.
In this sentence you may not know the word knoll and so are not sure of what part of speech it is.
Maybe you can recognize the subject (she) and verb (walked). Maybe you can recognize the article the. Articles (a,an,the) come before nouns so are the four words after the nouns?
You might recognize small as being an adjective so this is article +adjective + noun. Actually small rounded and grassy are all adjectives so we have article + adj+adj+adj + noun.
So knoll is a noun.
