in order to replace the "actuator switch" if you mean the soleniod you need to find the soleniod either on the passenger side firewall or on the passenger side inner fender, there is 2 bolts holding it , first disconnect the battery, then remove the wires from each side carefully remembering where they go, i like to wire tie them together to be sure. Then i remove the old soleniod and replace in with a new one. If it isn't the soleniod and your talking about the ignition cylinder, then you turn the key to acc. and push the lock pin in which is located on the underside of the steering column, once the pin is pushed in the cylinder should slide out, then insert the new cylinder.

the ignition actuator is broken, you can turn off the "battery power" by the the ignition actuator rod that leads to the ignition switch, it runs along the top of the steering column under the dash, locate it and pull it towards the steering wheel, this should shut off the power. or you can unhook you battery, but either way you will have to replace the actuator.

Replacing the ignition switch actuator on a 1988 Ford f150 is a complicated and multi-step process. First, remove the necessary panels to gain access to the steering column. Second, remove the screws and bolts holding the steering column to the dash. Third, locate the ignition switch and remove the actuator rod, replacing it with a new one. Re-attach everything to the dash and replace the panels. If this does not work, or seems too confusing, it may be in one's best interest to seek out a professional mechanic.

You do not need a key to replace the ignition switch.

User Avatar

have you tried pushing in on the ignition as you turn it.you may have to push hard.that should be just a new ignition, otherwise it could be in the ignition circuit. I also had this problem and the dealership could not fix it. so I replace the Ignition switch and that fixed the problem.

Look under the column, there should be a hole with a recessed release button. Put the key in and turn it back while pressing the release with something small enough to fit in there. I used an awl and it was really easy These instructions actually refer to replacing the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Replacing the actuator usually involoves pulling the steering wheel.

Replace the pickup coil, ignition module, and ignition coil. One of them is causing the problem and possibly damaged the other two ignition components. Should replace distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires too, just as a precaution. Unless all that was done already trying to eliminate the problem.
