These two are synonyms. Both speed and velocity are the time derivative of the diplacement. Confusion may come from the fact that these words are sometimes used to describe a scalar quantity and sometimes a vector qty. Proper usage of these would be in the vectorial form, however, it is often used under the scalar form, when direction or orientation is trivial.

Speed only tells how fast something is going, while velocity tells speed and direction.

The speed is the magnitude component of the velocity, so yes.

How do you know an objects speed and velocity?

if the objects distance travelled and time is given then speed=distance/time eg- distance travelled 50 mtrs time taken 5 seconds speed 50/5 =10m/s velocity=u(initial velocity 0 for free falling objects) + at(acceleration x time)

What do you need to know other then speed to determine an objects velocity?

The direction in which it's moving. This is a very important concept, and a great question.

You do not know an objects velocity until you know what?

To know an object's velocity, you need to know its speed and direction. You can measure speed by calculating how long an object takes to arrive at a new position. So by knowing an object's starting position, ending position, and the time it took to get there, you can calculate its average velocity. In a more advanced calculation, you could choose starting and ending positions that are extremely close to one another and calculate "instantaneous velocity." Velocity is known as a "vector value". A vector not only has a length, but a direction. In this case, "length" is the same as "speed", and direction is its change in position.

When do you know an objects velocity?

When you have calculated or measured it.
