Yes you can become a citizen but it is not automatic because you married a US citizen. You have one thing going for you - your green card. You have to file form N400 - Naturalization papers with the INS to become a citizen. It might take a while because since 9/11, the US has tightened the whole immigration process and that's good. So, go to the INS home page, printoff the N400, read it carefully and thoroughly, and go from there. You might want to get some qualified help (Attorney, catholic charities, pro bono organizations for immigration, etc). Hope this helps Thank you for the help. i will have my girl try it out. her green cards expires in 2 years.

Anyone can marry a US citizen, green card or not. The marriage does not automatically give any special privileges to the newly married person. The US citizen can petition for you to be permitted to apply for residency, etc. It is not necessary to be a green card holder to marry a US Citizen. It is important to stay in the US legally with proper immigration papers in order to marry a US citizen.

Yes, but the US citizen should sponsor his/her spouse's immigration in order for him/her to get a green card.

You simply marry him and apply for Permanent Resident status (Green Card).

no Being a US Citizen entitles a person to a great number of privileges than being a green card holder. A person can become a US Citizen only after becoming a green card holder. A person should have been a green card holder for 5 yrs or 3yrs ( if married to a US citizen).Green card and then citizenship is the valid, designated route.

User Avatar

no you do not, as long as you have a birth certificate showing you were born in the United States or you have documentation that supports you have become a US citizen a green card in unnecessary.

User Avatar

NOPE. There is no need for a legal Green card holder to marry a USC for the sake of becoming a USC. If that person is a GC holder for 5 years and is above 18 yrs of age and maintained the required continuous residence criteria, then he/she can become a USC on his/her own.

No, it doesn't make them a citizen if they marry one. I am a German citizen with a permanent resident green card and married a solider. It didn't make me a US citizen like most people would think. A person in this situation still has to wait for 5 years in Permanent Resident status and then apply for citizenship.

User Avatar

No you cannot become US citizenship without a green card. For a new green card to replace the lost one you should file Immigration Form I-90. Only with a green card as proof for your lawful permanent resident status you can even start the naturalization process. to become US citizen.

Someone with a green card is a legal resident, it will be about the same requirements as for US citizen to get a marriage license, check with your county clerk if you have any doubt over this matter.
