The ones that grew up the fastest got the most sunlight and have proliferated around the world. you can see plants compete through the process of "sucession" in your local bushland. ground covers are generally out competed overtime by canopy species. so its built in genetical codes that the successful plants have developed over time ie they have evolved. As in occasionally plant shoots try to grow downwards, they die and don't set seed. the ones that grew upwards then set seed, and of course having the genetic data that says grow against gravity and to the light, That is the trait that it's seeds also will probly be born with.
