I say yes! My 4 shelties are strictly indoor dogs with the exception of using the bathroom in our fenced in very small, & clean yard. We fostered a stray feral cat and her kittens for 2+ mos in order for them to become adoptable.(totally isolated from our dogs) Last month we surrendered them to the humane society and since have made 2 visits there. My 6 yr old MUST pet every dog she sees. My 9 yr old, otherwise perfectly healty dog has come down with kennel cough. We do not go to dog parks or any other parks with her. They are NEVER around any other animals, ever. So the ONLY thing that makes sense is that she got it from US who got it from the Humane society. I was told a dog that had it can spread it for up to 3 wks AFTER they stop showing all signs of having had it. SO this is why I am saying absolutely yes!

Kennel Cough is a condition in dogs that causes upper respiratory infection, characterized by coughing or hacking. Recent research suggests that humans exposed to dogs suffering Kennel Cough may develop similar upper respiratory symptoms.

Yes. In fact, kennel cough can be transmitted to humans IF they are immunosuppressed. I know this to be true because I caught the virus bordatella from a dog I rescued from the animal shelter who had kennel cough. My immune system is suppressed from being on steroids and chemo medication. A day later after picking the dog up I got sick with the virus which in humans is similar to the virus that causes whooping cough. Infants can also get this virus along with the elderly. Everything I read said "No" cannot be transmitted. This is why I am responding. Its not common but it CAN be contagious to humans.

Kennel Cough, also known as tracheobronchitis, is a highly infectious respiratory illness that spreads through an aerosol route. In other words, it spreads through particles in the air from one dog to another.

Prevention includes either a SQ or IN vaccination (shot under the skin or a spray up the nose) every 6 months, not boarding un-vaccinated animals, and cleaning kennels thouroughly.

Once your dog has completed treatment for Kennel Cough, it can continue to infect other dogs for 6-14 weeks. Being vacinated for Kennel Cough does not guarantee complete protection (no vaccine guarantees complete protection) but it will lower the chance of infection.

Why does your toy poodle have an inward cough?

By inward I suppose you mean it coughs from the throat. Many dogs can have a cough (kennel cough) if they are around other dogs that have it. It is very contagious. Take your dog to the veterinarian he can tell you what is wrong. Also, keep up with it's vaccinations yearly. There is a vaccine for kennel cough.

Why dont you answer my question about kennel cough being passed from dogs to humans?

NO & if it were kennel cough the vet would tell the owner. Kennel cough is highly contagious to other dogs (not humans) & vet would recommend in home quarantine until all antibiotics were finished & dog is rechecked. It sounds like a typical upper respiratory infection that is not passed to humans

Does penicillin cure kennel cough in dogs?

You need to take your dog in to a Veterinarian to be examined. Kennel cough is a virus which antibiotics are ineffective against. A Vet will usually give you antibiotics only to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Do not try to treat this at home, take your pet to a Veterinarian for the correct treatment.

Is there a home remedy for kennel cough for a little dog?

Kennel cough IS highly contagious but its like a human cough, you wouldn't go to the doctor to treat it so why get the vet to treat it. A teaspoon of good quality manuka honey a few times a day and some plain natural yoghurt after their tea. It'll go away in about a week.
