There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
Check to see if you are getting fuel and spark
It depends on the indicator. Check engine means the engine computer has detected a malfunction. The oil can is an oil pressure problem, a battery is a charging problem, etc
Depends on vehicle, engine, and driving habits The 2.3L is rated at 21 city and 28 highway
The Ferrari 599 has a V 12 engine with 620 horsepower. It ranges between getting 12- 20 miles per gallon of gasoline depending on the driving conditions such as road or highway.
No idea to be honest, but i have a 95 Corsica with a similar problem that will turn the Service engine light on after a while of driving highway speeds, or after reaching highway speeds and slowing down again. After getting the code read i found out it was for the EGR valve sensor. Basically meaning that its positioning fine at normal in town driving but not working as it should at higher speeds. Again i can't assure you this is a positive solution but i would recommend running your car as you would normally get on the highway and then while the light stays on going to AutoZone (They will run service engine soon checks for free) or a mechanic you trust. hope this helps.
sounds like a fuel pump
If by this you mean only "hot heat" when drive at highway speeds likely thermostat bad and/or almost stuck and takes long time warm up from high engine RPM during highway driving.
If the underlying cause of the light is taken care of the OBD check engine light will go off after 6 warm up/driving cyclec or one within 50 miles of highway driving at a steady speed. If its still on you still have the problem/malfunction.
Fuel pump is my guess.

less stop and go driving causes less wear and tear on engine components.
had same problem with my probe stalling whilst driving after stopping short spell and would then restart. answer was located in immobilizer circuit which cut in at wrong times only cure was to have immobilizer disconnected.
