The automatic transmission is one area of the vehicle that very few people consider, because it is out of sight. Don’t wait until it starts dropping you a hint! Consider the advantages of regular vehicle maintenance with a change of the fluid and filter. Over time and distance, your vehicle’s automatic Transmission Fluid begins to break down as additives are depleted; it oxidizes and loses its ability to cool and lubricate; its ability to protect the transmission from wear and possible mechanical failure is also diminished. The filter’s purpose is to keep contaminates in the fluid from entering the working components. Standard Automatic Transmission Fluid Once a year or every 25,000 to 40,000 miles is an appropriate interval, or as your owner’s manual suggests. AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended for use up to 50,000 miles under severe service* and up to 100,000 miles under normal service* or according to the vehicle manufacturer recommended intervals, whichever is longer. As to the Correct Steps involved on an Escort consult you [ Repair Manual] if you plan to do it yourself. If not find a Transmission shop you trust and and have them do it. Good Luck and Remember.

What would cause a kickdown cable on a 90 Topaz to stop working?

Is it a cable or a rod? Check to see that it did not just come off. It's a rod linkage. The end of the rod that connects to the tansmission won't move. Thus the gas paddle won't go to the floor. You will have to check the adjustment on the linkage. Slack the bolt that holds the rod and see if it moves freely at the transmission up and down. If it does, then its just an adjustment at the throttle. If it does not, then you will have to have the transmission checked at the shop.

If the engine starts but the car does not go forwards or backwards what is wrong?

The transmission is not engaging. Either the transmission control linkage is somehow disconnected or the transmission is not working. This could be due to excessively low fluid, the controller is not working, or a mechanical failure in the transmission.

On a F350 diesel truck how do i know if it is the transmission or something else when it won't pull in none of the gears.?

have someone change gears, while not running, and make sure the linkage from the gear lever, whether automatic or not, is moving the linkage for the transmission itself. if the linkage is moving on the trasmission, then its probably in the tranny. also make sure the drive shaft is working (runs from the transmission to the rear differential).
