The Spanish-American War took place from April 25, 1898 to August 12, 1898. Some of key figures on the side of the US, Cuba, and the Philippines were William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Emilio Aguinaldo, and George Dewey. Key figures on the side of Spain were Maria Christina, Manuel Macias, Patricio Montojo, and Praxedes Sagasta. The Treaty of Paris was adopted at the end of the war.

The US Navy's Asiatic Squadron assembled in Hong Kong, took on provisions and coal and headed for Manila under Commodore George Dewey. It opened the war by destroying the Spanish fleet under Admiral Patricio Montojo in six hours on 1 May 1898. Admiral William Sampson's Atlantic Fleet met Admiral Pascual Cevera's Squadron coming out of Santiago on 3 July and in five hours had destroyed Spain second fleet.

General William Shafter had Cuba under control and General Nelson Miles would land on Puerto Rico on 25 July and by 13 August an Armistice had been signed.
