Who dies in The Lord of the Rings?

Some of the main characters that die are Boromir (older brother of Faramir, son of Denethor, member of the Fellowship of the Ring), King Theoden (of Rohan), the King of the Nazguls (once one of the Nine Kings), King Theoden's son (prince of Rohan), Suruman (the Wise), Suaron (the biggest enemy of all), Wormtoungue (once a man of Rohan, now in the service of Suruman), the leader of the Elves who came to Helm's Deep, Gollum (also known as Smeagol, and who was once a Hobbit) and lots of Orcs, Men, Goblins, and Elves.

In the books, NO elves fought at Helm's Deep (except Legolas, as a member of the broken Fellowship of the Ring). The southern war was fought by men of Gondor and Rohan. The elves were tied up in the north with attacks from Moria and Mirkwood.

Some of the major characters to die were Boromir, slain while defending Merry and Pippin from orcs, King Theoden of Rohan, who fell in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the suicide of Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, and the murder of Saruman, the disgraced former leader of the White Council.
