It was called the 'Sputnik' and was put into orbit on October 4th, 1957. The timing was 'tweaked' to mark the 40th anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Sputnik-1, launched on October 4, 1957. (That's the first one that successfully achieved earth orbit. There may have been earlier attempts that failed, just as the US had before its first success.)
