In the U.S., the biggest news was the resignation of President Richard Nixon in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the convictions of some of his aides. Nixon had refused to release recorded tapes to investigators; the U.S. Supreme Court voted unanimously that he had to release them. The House of Representative Judiciary Committee adopted articles of Impeachment in July. Nixon resigned in August.

President Gerald Ford issued a presidential pardon exonerating Nixon for any crimes he may have committed while in office. Nelson Rockefeller became Vice President.

NASA astronauts returned from a record 84 days in Skylab 4, Mariner 10 investigated Mercury, and Pioneer 11 photographed Jupiter.
