The Assyrians conquered the 10 tribes of the northern Isrealites. They did not scatter the tribes, they sent their aristocracy of to Assyria to rule new peoples there. They imported a new aristocracy to rule the ten tribes who remained in place. By this technique, they had unsympathetic rulers who would control the people and not tolerate any uprisings.

The Babylonians did the same thing later to the two southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin - sending off their aristocracy to Babylon to rule there, and importing a new aristocracy to rule the tribes.

How did the Lost Tribes of Israel earn their name?

Where the kingdom of Israel was destroyed by foreign invaders and its people scattered, the identities of the legendary Twelve Tribes were seriously compromised and it became customary to speak of these as "lost." In recent years, some folks in places rather remote from Israel have been noticed as practicing Hebraic customs, some of these people even identify themselves as one or more of the "lost tribes." However, cultural diffusion is a tricky thing, as ideas can be passed on without exchange of the actual people. New sciences such a genetic profiling may someday give us a more definitive answer on who belongs to the "lost" tribes.

How did europeans diffuse Christianity?

The apostles, who disappeared from biblical view after Christ's ascension, took it to the "lost tribes of the House of Israel" who were scattered around Asia Minor and elsewhere at the time [God knew where]. And it continued to be taught and spread as world upheavals caused the migration of people into Europe and throughout the world."...Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand..." (Matt.10:5-7)."James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting..." (James 1:1)

Are the Hebrews and the Israelites the same people?

Those called Israelis are those who reside in the land of Israel as of now. Those who are Israelites are those who are descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are scattered of out the land of Israel, and are of the 12 tribes of Israel. These people are traditionally considered to be the Jews although there are minority opinions that claim them to be African-American, Palestinian, and otherwise. So, the answer would be no, they are not the same people.

Why was Israel scattered?

If you are referring to the event wherein the Assyrians scattered the Ten Lost Tribes of the Kingdom of Israel, the event was not uncommon in those days. The underlying idea was that people were very land-driven and community-driven. If a person was taken away from his community and his land, he would become more docile and less likely to revolt against Assyrian authority. Most peoples, like Arameans, Ugaritic, Hittite, and other nations that were similarly defeated were similarly scattered. The only reason we remember Israel is that the Southern Kingdom of Judah, which shared an origin story with the Northern Kingdom of Israel, was not conquered and disbursed by the Assyrians.

What nationalities do the 12 tribes of Israel refer to?

According to traditional interpretations of the Bible, the 12 Tribes of Israel do not correspond 1:1 with modern countries or nations. The 12 Tribes of Israel and their descendants are typically considered Jews or they have been assimilated into larger nationalities (such as Mesopotamian).
