In Pokemon gold how do you get from new bark to blackthorn city?

When you are stood in Mahogany Town outside the Pokemon Centre, facing down- as you look at it- turn left and then go up through the gap between the two ledges between the Gym and the Pokemon Centre. Follow the path to the right where there is a house and man stood in front of a tree. If the man stops you and asks you if you want to buy a RageCandyBar, you need to progress the story further, if not then ignore him and carry on going to the right hand side of the screen.

You will now be on Route 44, there is a fork in the road and you can either take the low road (past a Psychic, a fisherman and two Ace Trainers) or you can take the high road (past a Fisherman and a Fanatic-or whatever you call those trainers who brag about their rare pokemon). All these Trainers are avoidable.

You need then to continue right until you find some steps. Go up these and you will see a Birdkeeper to your right, easily avoided by going left around the two large trees in front of you.

Continue right until you see a cave entrance. Enter this cave.

The "Ice Path", as it is known, is quite tricky in parts and could take some time to traverse, depending on your pokemon team and problem solving skills.

Once you are on the final straight of the cave it is advisable to heal your pokemon if necessary as (if I remember correctly) there is a Kimono girl waiting for you outside the exit, and will challenge you to a battle. Once defeated you will be free to roam Blackthorn City ;)
