The very large gold chain that he wore around his neck was one. The other was that his beard was longer than the others. A third was that he claimed that he was leader of the Dwarves and nobody refuted him.

13 Dwarves:Thorin Oakenshield (their leader)BalinDwalinFíliKíliDoriNoriOriOinGlóinBifurBofurBomburthat's if you only include memeber's of Thorin's party, by the time of the battle of five armies there are a considerably larger number of dwarves, with reinforcements having joined from the north led by Dain.

Why does the dwarves' arrival create such a stir in lake town?

Because Thorin is the grandson of the King of below the Mountain (Thror). They are happy to see him and the other dwarves.

Who led the dwarves after Thorin's death?

Dain Ironfoot King Under the Mountain inherited the throne from Thorin Oakenshield after he died in the Battle of the Five Armies. He led the Dwarves from the time of the events in the Hobbit until Sauron's Attack on Erebor (which was concurrent with the Siege of Minas Tirith in Gondor).

Who was Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit?

Thror was the grandfather of Thorin, the leader of the dwarves in the adventure. It was Thror that made the map that they used to find the 'back door' to the mountain. Thror also passed the key to the door along with the map to his son Thrain. These were given to Gandalf, who gave them to Thorin. Thror also possessed one of the Seven Dwarven Rings of Power, but when he entered Moria he handed it to Thrain.

Who put the dwarves in prison for being rude in The Hobbit?

The Elven-king, Thranduil, who ruled the Woodland Elves (Northern part of Mirkwood Forest) put Thorin and Company in prinson. Elves and Dwarves have distrusted each other ever since the First Age (The Hobbit is set toward the end of the Third Age), so Thranduil was not kindly disposed toward Thorin's Company. Thorin further angered Thranduil by refusing to tell him either his name or his business, because Thorin didn't trust Thranduil either.
