When you trigger an effect (such as summoning breaker or apprentice magician)that says to put a spell counter on a card that can accepts spell counters. Oh and put as much spell counters as it says you should.

A spell counter is a little marker or token you place on a card when directed to. What the spell counter does, is determined by the card it is placed on.

For example, Breaker the Magical Warrior's spell counter boosts his ATK by 300pts, and he can remove it to destroy an S/T card. He normally gains the counter by being normal summoned, but it can be added to him by other cards, like Pitch Black Powerstone.

What you use to represent the counter, is up to you. Some people use coins, some use dice, or glass beads.

If a card has a maximum, it will say so. Breaker the Magical Warrior for example, says (max 1), so can only hold one spell counter. If there is no stated limit, like Magical Citadel of Endymion, then you can place as many as you want .

A spell counter is a marker that you put on a card. You can use any materials, pebbles, coins and the like. You put it on a card which it can be placed on after you activated a spell card hence the name spell counter.

They are used for certain effects. EG for Royal Magic Library, when you have 3 spell counter on that card you can remove them to draw one card.

It depends on what you are trying to activate. You'd have to look at what the effect is - if you're trying to use Breaker the Magical Warrior's effect, he's an Ignition Effect, so you can't use it in the opponent's turn. If you are trying to use Miracle Restoring, that's a regular Trap Card, so can be used in the opponent's turn as normal.

In short, it's not the Spell Counters themselves that matter, it's the effect that's using them that decides when it can be used.

There's no hard limit. You've only got five S/T slots, and the Field Card slots, so you're limited in how many Spell cards you can set, or have continuous ones active. But assuming you've got a way to keep replacing spell cards in hand, you can keep playing them until you run out.

Vincent Tunde's 'Tunde Trunado' deck wins in one turn, and plays about 20+ spell cards during it.

Spell counters are as treated like all counters: Counters.

Though for an answer this short, it is difficult to really understand truly of counters.

let us begin with a very interesting creature I like it call: The Venoms and Aliens.

Aliens and Venoms each have their own unique forms of "counters."

Aliens place alien counters while Venoms place Venom counters.

So what are these counters and what do they do?

First let us wipe away the spell, venom, alien, cloudian, all that confusing stuff and just go with "Counters."

"Counters" are actually what ever it is that you can find to place on your card such as coins, dice, tape, little skittles, anything that can be used to know that it is a counter. I prefer to use dice, for you can set the dice to how many counters is on your current card.

Basically it's like a number of some thing being put on your monster that will either accumulate or decrease. When a monster is removed from the field or flipped face down, the counters are removed.

That being noted: The second thing to understand is that "Counters" are used for certain abilities depending on the counter it self.

Venom counters tend to deduct attack points and kill off a creature. Remember though: Tend. But how do venoms work like that?

Same as Spells and Alien counters.... Card effects on the field allow the counters to have a certain ability depending on the counters it self.

Spell casters that uses Spell counters can remove these spell counters and usually only spell counters to preform certain effects or gain certain attack powers.

Venom monsters abilities can use these counters to deduct attack points or even use spell cards that unleash a devastating effect that could destroy a monster when their attack hits 0 due to these counters.

These counters how ever are for now render useless and are mainly just numbers or "things" being put on to cards that in time build up. The only time that counters are at use is when card effects on the fields like spell, traps, and monster effects are using these counters. That is when counters become devastating.

In short, Spell counters are just like any counter but remain the most important golden rule of counters: Spell counters are not venom counters.

Counters are counters, spell counters are spell counters, venom counters are venom counters, alien counters are alien counters and so on and so fourth. That being noted, I hope this helps you now understand, What are counters and spell counters.

Most of them just look for 'a spell card' to be activated. Equip Spell Cards will satisfy this requirement.

If an effect such as giant growth gives a creature counters until the end of turn would Proliferate add more counters that are removed at EoT or would the proliferated counters be permanent?

Be careful when reading the cards - Giant Growth gives a temporary +3/+3 but places no counters at all. Only cards that specifically say they place counters, will do so. People may use some kind of marker to represent the temporary bonus, but this marker is not a counter and is never counted as one. In general, temporary effects like Giant Growth will not use counters, but 'permanent' ones will, and thus effects that place counters tend not to have them wear off at end of turn. But either way, since Giant Growth places no counters, it means Proliferate doesn't interact with it in any way. If a card did place temporary counters, only the ones placed by that effect would be removed at end of turn. Any others created through Proliferate, or Doubling Season, would stay.
