In fine art what is meant by surface characteristics?
"Surface characteristics" merely describe the way a surface of a how the surface of a painting or sculpture looks or actually feels--rough, smooth, etc.
Illustration has its own rules and does not need to carry the same amount of refinement that Fine Art does. Many modern pieces are titled fine art without any real consideration for what genre they really are. Fine art is a refined work that has a message which considers all elements of art. Illustration is meant for a specific message and the design is based upon the product or message being delivered.
Ehh...i think i don't although many do. There is a lot of controversy over what is meant by "fine art" - but many people display reproductions or posters of famous art. I have a Van Gogh poster at home - just enjoy looking at it. Is a poster fine art? That's for someone smarter than me to decide. On the lighter side, I even had a Picasso on a t-shirt once!
