In lord of the flies For what purpose does jack merridew want his choir used?
to hunt and obey his demanding and cruel commands
The choir are simply a group of boys who arrive at the platform led by Jack Merridew. When Ralph wins the vote to be leader he reaffirms Jack's control of the choir and asks Jack what function he would like them to perform, Jack replies 'Hunters.' So on the surface that is all there is to the choir, they are a group of bboys who Jack names as his hunters. However the choir serve a…
It seems that the rest of the boys are individuals who didn't know each other prior to boarding the plane, with the exception of the twins Samneric. The choir by contrast are a close knit group who act as a team, they walk in parallel formation, wear the same uniform and are used to obeying the commands of their leader, Jack Merridew.
When Jack first makes an appearance in chapter one he is leading, "a party of boys, marching approximately in step in two parallel lines" Further quotes whih indicate Jack's control over his choir, are...."The boy who controlled them"... "He shouted an order and they halted"... "boys began to scatter from close line. The tall boy (Jack) shouted at them, 'Choir! Stand still!' Wearily obedient, the choir huddled into line"...One of the boy's asks 'But, Merridew…
In "lord of the flies" Ralph appoints jack and his choir to tend the fire, But as a ship goes by Jack and his choir are making their first kill of a pig, So Jack and his choir let the fire go out and the ship doesn't see them. So, the fire was neglected by Jack and his hunters(Choir) because they were preoccupied by killing a sow.
Obviously that will depend on the particular reader and I am assuming that as your teacher has probably asked you the question he would like to read your opinion of Jack Merridew not somebody Elses. hahaha wooow that's was rude! but MY impression is that he will be trouble because of the way Golding explains how he walks into the story!
Although he claims that he is fearless I think he is afraid of not having any power because he was probably given a lot of power before they arrived on the island. After all, Jack is the head chorister so he was very strict with the choir boys even though they were probably thousands of miles away from their private school.
