Michael Rosenbaum is no longer involved with the show during season 8, they use stock footage and stand-ins to imply Lex Luthors continual involvement in the story line. Rosenbaum has been quoted as saying his disapointed that they are using his image and implying to the fans that he is still there. There are rumors that he may return for the shows finale episodes (whenever that may occur)

∙ 8y agoMichael Rosenbaum, the actor that portrays Lex Luthor oni Smallville elected to not continue with the series and because of which the writers had to write him out in the Season 7 finale with him discovering Clark Kent's alien secret and then once he uses the Orb to insert it into the console in the Fortress of Solitude the fortress collapses on both Clark Kent as well as Alexander "Lex" Luthor himself. Lex was later revealed to be badly injured by the Fortress collapsing on him but eventually due to the Alternate World Lionel Luthor making a deal with Darkseid Lex was restored to normal despite some remaining injuries from the collapse.
