Paul was focussed on converting people before the return of Jesus, which he thought would happen in his own lifetime. He accepted slavery as normal practice and enslavement as the lot that some must bear. He even sent an escaped slave, Onesemus back to his owner.
The history of slavery covers many different forms of human exploitation across many cultures throughout human history. Slavery can be traced to the earliest records, such as the Code of Hammurabi in 1760 BC which refers to slavery as an established institution.
Anti-slavery activists justified going against the institution of slavery using the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the realities of basic human rights. They showed the brutality of slavery and stated the issue that the slaves were human not animals.
Slavery was referred to as the "peculiar institution" because slavery was the exact contradiction to what America was founded on. America built its foundation on the notion that all men were created equally and had equal rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To enslave an individual would mean to deny them these basic human rights, undermining the very foundation of America.
Most human beings would say that slavery is wrong. Just because something is found in The Bible does not justify it being done. Consider that rape, incest, and murder are also found in the Bible as are most of the wayward ways of mankind.
It is an institution of bondage for a woman
Many whites were against slavery. There were abolution societies made of white who wanted to end slavery. Slavery is an obvious violation of human rights. In fact, many slave owners were doubtful that it was right, but it was necessary for their business and so they kept the institution going. The US had already ended the importation of slaves.
Harriet Beecher Stowe believed that the institution of slavery was ultimately to blame for itself, as it perpetuated the dehumanization and mistreatment of African Americans. She used her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to expose the cruelty and inhumanity of slavery, holding slave owners and the system itself accountable for its atrocities.
All the authors of the bible are human.
Slavery is as old as human existence.
Slavery is mentioned in some of the oldest human writing. It is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, and is covered in detail in Qur'an. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and many other ancient empires had slavery.
Slavery has been a human condition since ancient times (even the bible mentions slaves), it has therefore happened in most countries. Also, contrary to popular opinion slavery was not just practised on African people. The Roman empire had slaves taken form all races.
Yes it is. It is called 'Human Trafficking' but it is still slavery.
