The Giver gives him a memory of family and grandparents.
When Jonas asked his parents about love in "The Giver," they explain that love is a term used in the past and does not exist in their community. They say it is a feeling that confused people and caused problems. Jonas's parents emphasize the importance of precision of language and following the rules of their society.
He learned about releasing. He thought that it meant being sent "elsewhere" but really it was injecting a lethal toxin into a vein. He learned about colors. About sunshine and snow. And of music and love. He learned the rule about lying had exceptions. As he was aloud to lie. His father also was aloud to lie about the releasing of a newborn baby.
Hope this helps(;
