It was not a folktale. It was a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) published in The Saturday Evening Post, a popular weekly magazine at the time. It was made into an Opera by Douglas Moore in 1938 and later into a play.
It's unlikely- The Devil appeared in the two-part story The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, in which The Ood also made their debut. At the end of the story the planet was destroyed after being sucked into a Black Hole- it's possible that the series's scriptwriters may bring The Devil back for another appearance, but I wouldn't think it likely as it would look like they were running out of ideas and falling back on old material, which wouldn't do the show's reputation any good.

Mark Twain named the frog Daniel Webster as a humorous reference to the American statesman and orator, Daniel Webster. This choice added an element of irony and made the story more entertaining for readers.

In the story, Tom Sawyer tricks his friends into whitewashing a fence by convincing them it is a fun and desirable task, comparing it to a job that the famous orator had done.
