The religion changed a lot of times between The Roman Catholics and Protestants. Protestants are a christian religion in which the designs are much more simpler and also the prayer book was English ( they were poorer ). The Catholic religion was a christian religion in which the design were much more extravagant and there was huge decorations in the churches and monasteries, also the prayer book was in Latin ( they were richer )

During the reign of Henry VII he was a Catholic but then decided to become Protestant. When Henry VII died, the next in line for the thrown was his only son Edward VI, (MOTHER- JANE SEYMOUR) Edward then became king at the age of 9 and was brought up as a protestant. At the time the Churches were all in the design of the Roman Catholic religion which were much more extravagant, as i explained earlier. Edward then decided to change the churches from Catholic into Protestant as he was brought up strongly by his parents.

When Edward VI died at the age of 15, next in line for the thrown was his sister Mary I (bloody Mary) (MOTHER- CATHERINE OF ARAGON) Mary was a very strong Catholic and ignored what religion her parents and brother was. She changed all of the churches back into Catholics.

When Mary I died after a small reign as Queen, to fill her place was her other sister Elizabeth I (MOTHER- ANNE BOLEYN). Elizabeth I was a Protestant the same as her brother and parents, Because at that time the churches were all Catholic and she was Protestant she didn't think that it would be fair to take the Catholic religion away form the people and turn it back into Protestant practices, so she then at the decision to make to turn the practices back into Protestant or to leave them as Catholic.

She then decided to split them so the people, of the different religions could choose to become Protestant or Catholic. Everyone was happy as their religion was very important to them :)

During the reformation in the Tudor period there was a roller coater of changes happening to the church. The Religious roller coaster had many changes back and forth. Each monarch made a different change. One year England would be protestant the next catholic. There wasn't a big change for English people who were willing to go along with what ever there monarch but for those who believed strongly in there religion such as puritans and strong Catholics, there were serious arguments. The Religious roller coaster helps remember the different changes and how they affected people in England. These are all of the changes that happened to England in the Tudor period.

King Henry the eighth started the reformation and religious changes to the church after his wife Catharine of Aragon failed to produce a boy hire to be next in line to the thrown. The Spanish princess Catharine was also getting old and losing her looks. Henry wanted to divorce Catharine but there was one problem the head of the Catholic Church wouldn't allow him to get a divorce. Catholics believed you married for life and were very much against the idea of a divorce. Henry had to come up with a plan first he tried making a special appeal to the pope so he might have got papal dispensation this meant that the pope would then would agree to henrys request for a divorce because he was king of England and would not affect the way catholic churches banned divorce ether. This plan did not work, the pope refused to grant Henry this. Henry became more angry and more determined to get a divorce he already new who is new wife would be Anne Boleyn who worked for Catharine of Aragon. Henry had got Anne pregnant and could be a boy heir to the thrown what he wanted. Henry ordered the archbishop of Canterbury to give him a divorce so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The archbishop granted henrys a divorce against the wishes of the pope. This was only because the archbishop of Canterbury wanted to stay in the kings good books. This then lead England to break away from the Roman Catholic Church. This change from the England being catholic to protestant had a big impact on not just England but Europe too. Henry had some help from a big protestant called Martin Luther who helped him to break from Rome. Henry then placed him self head of church which in his eyes was perfectly legal. In some ways they were pleased Henry did change the religion of the country as they were angry at the Catholic Church for using them as a source of money. But there were not Meany great Protestants so it was difficult to change as they were completely different in what they believed. Henry also knew that the Catholic Church was hated and used it to his advantage. The wealthiest Catholics in England were the monasteries were monks lived they were also the most loyal supports of the pope, this made them a threat to Henry. By the time Henry was leader of the church most monks became fat lazy and only seemed to take from the poor. Also some ministries were huge and owned big amounts of land. They did not follow Henry so he decided to shut the monasteries down this period of time was called dissolution because Henry attacked the monasteries, they were to be dissolved. This is when Henry sent round government officials to check up on what monks were doing this was organized by Thomas Cromwell. Henry wanted the monks to come back with news that the monks were not doing as they should the officials new this as well; they asked the monks trick questions. Sometimes the officials would put things that weren't exactly true and they new that it was just what Thomas Cromwell needed to shut the monasteries down. After this took place the smaller monasteries were shut down and then the larger and more valuable ones after that. Few people in England were sorry to see them go and few monks protested. Most monasteries were reduced to ruin. This is how its was left until Henry died in 1547 but it did not see the end to the religious changes.

After Henry died Edward the sixth took over, Henrys the eighths only son. He was only nine years old and needed 2 advisers because of how young he was. The first adviser was his uncle the duke of Somerset. He was replaced by Duke of Northumberland both men wanted massive religious changes made to England. King Edward was mostly remembered for the changes that he made during his reign. Laws were passed to make churches plainer as the catholic churches were bright and astringent with rushes on the floor, rood screen, wall paintings, scented candles and statues of the Virgin Mary. Protestant churches were dull and plain with plain white wash walls, tiles on the floor, pulpit for preaching and a wooden table. Edward was a big protestant believer and had the services changed to English. He called the services Holy Communion which is what we still call are church services. An archbishop wrote a prayer book also in English. Priest's garments were more simple and plain. Also under Edwards rain Priest were allowed to marry.

All these changes were a very big thing as they were nothing like the

Catholic Church and what England had been use too. Edward had made a big impression of some parts of the world too and parts of Germany and Switzerland had also broke away from Rome. Under Edward England became a Protestant country with a Church of England. Kind Edwards's health was never good and died in 1553. But before he died Edward wanted to make Lady Jane Grey his cousin the heir to the thrown not his half sister Mary who was next in line. This was because Mary was a massive Catholic Edward wanted England to stay present. Putting Lady Jayne Grey next in line to the thrown would solve all his problems. When Edward died Lady Jayne Grey took to the thrown and is known as the nine day queen because she was only on the thrown for nine days. She was beheaded after being guilty of treason in 1554. This was not the last of the religious changes ether.

Mary the first who was also known as bloody Mary took over after Lady Jayne Grey was beheaded. When she was first put on the thrown she was very popular it was this popularity that got her to the thrown and out Lady Jayne Grey off. However this popularity did not end after she introduced her religious changes to England and her marriage. The catholic mass was brought back and Holy Communion was banned. All priests had to be catholic and could not marry again. The basic protestant churches were put back to the bright Catholic Church. Services were held in Latin again and the English prayer book was banned. The pope was also made head of church once again. Most of England respected these changes but the ones that didn't and refused to change to catholic ways were burned at the steak and other methods of torture and death instruments were used. Nearly 300 people died at the steak and Archbishop Cranmer who had written the banded English prayer book was also a victim of this method of death. She became even more unpopular after each one of these events hence why they called her 'bloody Mary'. By this time English people began to fear the power of Spain. Mary had accepted a marriage proposal from the king of Spain Philip the second. He was also a very strong catholic. Mary's advisors and friends told her not to marry him but she ignored there advice and married him in 1554. People in England at the time feared that Philip would control England this lead her too be even more disliked by her people. The marriage turned out a disaster as Philip spent most of his time in Spain and they rarely ever saw each other.

Mary got paranoid about wanting a child to be next in line to the thrown and did every think she could to have a child she took herbal remedies which were said to help but with no success. In the end Mary failed to have any children and died in 1558 she was a very unhappy person in the end. Her marriage which she was hopeful didn't work out and the people of England hated her. The religious roller coaster is not at an end just yet.

Elizabeth the first became queen after Mary the first died. Elizabeth never married so the Tudor eerier ended with her. Elizabeth's reign is remembered for two things executing Mary Queen of Scots and the Spanish armada. Elizabeth was most famous for her temper which she got of both her mother and farther. Elizabeth was a protestant but did not change the country to any set religion. She never really had much of a big part on the religious roller coasters as her family did. But is credited for taking England to nearly the heights of its power. Elizabeth also is mostly remembered for executing Mary of Scots who planed to kill Elizabeth. Elizabeth hesitated about signing Mary's death sentence. Eventually she did and Mary was executed in 1587. Also the Spanish armada is what Elizabeth is well known for too. The Spanish tried to attack England there aim was to over throw protestant England. This plane did not go as well as the Spanish had hoped and did not work. The Spanish lost a lot of money and was a complete disaster but for England it was a big celebrated victory. In the final year of her reign she became very unpredictable this might have been because she plastered her face in white powder which contained led. She might have had lead posing and this stopped her ability to think normally. She then died in 1603 after 45 years on the thrown and an end to the Tudor period. This then ends the Religious roller coaster.

So there you have it 4 kings and queens that made are churches what they are today. King Henry the eighth change England to protestant translated The Bible and changed head of church. Next came Edward. Edward had new prayer books and kept the religion of the country as protestant. Edwards's sister Mary then took over the thrown. Mary then changed the religion to Catholic, church services were spoke in Latin and the pope was changed to head of church. After Mary died, her sister Elizabeth became ruler of England. Elizabeth changed the country to no set religion; church services were spoke in English and had a governor of the church instead of a head of church. The church has changed dramatically over hundreds of years.
