It isn't. Some people think that the last supper was a Passover seder, however, the timing was wrong for that to have happened.

Why is the last supper is important?

In many ways, the artists that attempted to paint the Last Supper pretty much had to guess what the Apostles looked like; not like there were pictures anywhere. If you had meant "The" Last Supper, try comparing the details of the figures with others in other Last Suppers.

How does Leonardo distinguish Judas from the rest of the apostles in the Last Supper?

As I recall Judas was facing away from Jesus. Perhaps this was an indication of shame or fear in Leonardo's interperation. Firstmate Leonardo used several ways to distinguish Judas Iscariot from the rest of the apostles in his depiction of the last supper. Some of his ways were not traditionally used by others who had painted the same scene in the past, however, they made the painting more dramatic. First, Judas is holding a bad of silver in his right hand. This would symbolize the money he was paid to betray Jesus. Also, he is reaching for the same bread as Jesus with his left hand. This would signify Jesus' words that "the first to eat of the bread will be the one to betray me."

How did the Bible influence the Last Supper and art?

The Bible has influenced art in many ways. Early on in Christianity and throughout the Middle Ages many people could not read so Bible stories were communicated to the masses in the statuary, stained glass and fresco paintings in churches. The fresco 'The Last Supper' was commissioned by the church and painted by Leonardo da Vinci. It is the story of the Passover meal Jesus partook in with his Diciples before he was arrested, an important moment in Christianity. Before the printing press was invented the only copies of the Bible were created in Monasteries by Monks (beautiful illustrated manuscripts). Artists of the time were commissioned by wealthy patrons to create certain works of art, usually biblical, and the Church of Rome and it's Popes were one of the biggest patrons. There were also certain rules about what could be painted. Themes of paintings were supposed to be grand themes of Bible heros or Mythological figures, this changed when the Impressionists began to paint pictures of everyday life and peasants, and one reason they were so controversial.

The Lord's Supper was a type of Passover. This connection is established by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians. 1Co 5:7 …………………. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. The Passover was the memorial of Israel's redemption from the bondage of Egypt; and the Lord's Supper is the memorial of the believers redemption from the bondage of sin and Satan. Both were instituted to remember an event. The Passover remembered when the angel of death passed over all the houses that had the blood of a lamb painted on the door posts the Lord's supper remembers when Jesus died (as the lamb of God) as a sacrifice for sin.

How is the Passover similar to the Eucharist?

Scholars believe that the Last Supper was actually a Passover seder (the traditional ritual meal celebrated by the Jews in the spring). As part of the Passover tradition, Jews cannot eat bread or leavening for the 8 days of Passover (because of the story of the Exodus where their bread did not have time to rise), so the bread that Jesus gave the apostles to eat (the symbol that eventually became the Eucharist) was most likely Matzah (the unleavened bread of passover). This also explains why Passover and Easter usually coincide.

Why do Adventists use unfermented fruit juice in the celebration of the Lords Supper?

Seventh-day Adventists shun Alcoholic Beverages, one of which is wine, or fermented fruit juice. Adventists read in The Bible, which is their guide to living, that the human body is, in a sense, a temple that should not be defiled in any way. Since alcohol is known to be injurious to the human body in a number of ways, Adventists do not partake of beverages that contain it. Incidentally, alcohol is a drug, just like heroin or cocaine, and is always classified as such.
