Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 after the Yardbirds disbanded. Jimmy Page had the right to the name "The Yardbirds" but all the original members... Chris Dreja, Jim McCarthy and Keith Relf were done with it all. Jimmy Page and Peter Grant searched for new musicians and came up with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. The first song they played together was "Train-Kept a Rollin'" and they played their first show as Led Zeppelin at the Marquee in 1968 shortly after their first blues based album "Led Zeppelin " would come out and outsell former Yardbird Jeff Beck's album Truth. Hope that helps
Their guitarist, Jimmy Page played with the famous 1960s band The Yardbirds. However, the other lead guitarist, the famed Jeff Beck, left the band to start his solo career. After that, The Yardbirds began to fall apart. Disheartened, Page caught the eye of band manager Peter Grant, who urged Page to create a new band. However, Page had trouble finding a lead singer. That was until he met Robert Plant, an in-demand session singer. From there, the 2 hired Peter Grant as their manager and then had John Paul Jones and John Bonham join, as bassist and drummer respectively. However, they did not call themselves Led Zeppelin right off the bat. First, they called themselves The New Yardbirds, finishing off the American tour that The Yardbirds dissolved during. But from there, they renamed themselves and dominated rock during the 70s
Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968. It was following the New Yardbirds, that Jimmy Page had been part of. There were tour obligations to be meet and Page found new personnel to accomplish that. Robert Plant suggested John Bonham and the three were joined by JP Jones who had got word that Jimmy was beginning a new band. Kieth Moon (of The Who) is often given credit for suggesting the name of the band as a joke when he stated that "they would go over like a lead zeppelin!"
